Encore’s Friendly Summer Tennis

It’s time to get ready for another season of Encore’s Friendly Summer Tennis!

If you are interested in playing this summer, please email Carolyn Prazenka to be added to the weekly game scheduling list.

Encore’s Summer Tennis is for intermediate/advanced players interested in playing social tennis.

Games will be scheduled from 9:00–10:30 AM on Mondays through Thursdays at Mead Park, Har-Tru Tennis Courts (starting May).

Each week, you will receive an email inviting you to sign up for the days you'd like to play based on your schedule and availability.

Tennis Permits must be purchased through the New Canaan Recreation Department prior to play:

Resident Seniors (62+): $80
Resident Adults: $140
Non-Residents: $250

Or, you may pay a $15 guest fee each time you play—permits are encouraged.

A Magical Firefly Walk

Step into a summer evening filled with wonder as we experience one of nature’s most mesmerizing light shows—fireflies dancing at dusk.

We’ll begin with an optional group dinner at Cava (2 Forest St, New Canaan) at 6:30 PM. The prix fixe menu is $35, payable at the restaurant. This is a relaxed opportunity to connect before the adventure begins.

After dinner, we’ll head to the beautiful Colhoun Preserve to kick off the night. A guide from the New Canaan Nature Center will share a brief presentation about the center’s work and the fascinating biology of fireflies. Then, we’ll walk into the meadows to witness their magic firsthand.

Firefly Walk Details: Location, Parking & Access

Location: Colhoun Preserve, 194–234 Davenport Ridge Road, New Canaan. Please arrive by 8:30 PM
What to Bring: Flashlight and bug spray
What to Wear: Comfortable walking shoes, boots or sneakers (terrain is mostly easy, with some uneven areas)

Parking Options:

Preserve Entrance: Limited parking (~ 5–6 cars) in the gravel lot directly across from 203 Davenport Ridge Road
Additional Parking: Available on Skyview Lane, a short walk from the preserve

Walking Details:

Distance to viewing area: Approximately 0.5 miles
Total walking distance: About 1 to 1.5 miles
Terrain: Generally easy, with some uneven sections

Safety:

Staff from the New Canaan Nature Center will be on-site with flashlights to assist with safely crossing the road to the wooden gate entrance.

Welcome to the Healthy Nuts Supper Club! Register now to be included in the 2026/2027 Group.

The Healthy Nuts Supper Club is all about bringing couples together for a fun, engaging evening filled with great food, laughter, conversation, games, dancing—or whatever makes the night memorable.

The only “nutty” twist? The food must be healthy!

Couples will be grouped into sets of four or five (8 to 10 people total). Each group will take turns hosting supper at one couple’s home. The host will coordinate the evening and each couple will contribute a dish. Rotating hosts means everyone gets a chance to shine!
We plan to kick off the second year in August/September 2026. Each group can decide when to hold their first gathering and how often they'd like to meet.
Existing members don't need to register for year 2026-2027.

Each dish should be made with health in mind—whether it’s nutritious ingredients, smart substitutions, or lighter cooking techniques. Each couple will also briefly share the health benefits of their dish.

Peggy's "Trail Trekkers" Advanced Hikes

Hike at Bear Mountain State Park

Tuesday, June 30th @ 9:15am

Peggy will lead this hike on the Appalachian Trail at Bear Mountain State Park! This is a 4.5 mile loop/AT with an elevation gain of 1,200’

There are steep steps as well as some rock scrambling near the top. The views at the top are worth the climb -- Hudson River and NYC! This will be a great workout and we will all support each other to get to the top!

You will be required to wear ankle hiking boots, trekking poles are optional. Bring water and a snack (protein bar). Don't forget bug/tick spray too.

* Lunch will follow in the Restaurant 1815 in the Bear Mountain Inn.

* The drive from New Canaan is just about one hour, we will start the hike at 9:30am

* Parking is $10. Meet at 9:15am at the Bear Mountain Inn parking lot, so we can be on the trail by 9:30am.

* If rain or thunder is in the forecast the hike will be postponed. Peggy will update as we get closer.

Join us as we carpool to Middlefield, CT for a fun day of peach and blueberry picking at Lyman Orchards, followed by a casual lunch at on-site Lyman's 1741 Pub & Grill.

You're welcome to carpool with the group or drive yourself—whatever works best for you. If you choose to carpool, please bring $5.00 to contribute to your driver for gas.

Tuesday, July 21st, Carpool departs at 9:30 am from Waveny Park (parking lot across from Waveny House)
10:30 am - Arrival at Lyman Orchards, 72 Lyman Road, Middlefield, CT 0645530am
~ 1 pm - Depart for Waveny Park
~ 2 pm - Approximate return to Waveny Park

Cost: There is no upfront cost for this event. Upon arrival at the orchard you will determine what you want to pick and pay on-site. Peaches: $16.00/half peck bag, $26.00/peck bag, $47.00/half bushel. Blueberries: $7.00/pint, $14.00/quart, $34.00/Four-quart, $62.00/tray. Cash, debit, and credit cards are accepted. Lunch at 1741 Pub & Grill is in addition.

Waveny Summer Free Concert Series

Wednesdays, June 17 - Sept 2

Music starts at 7:30pm

Encore will be gathering at the outdoor free town concerts every Wednesday, starting June 17 till September 2.

We will set up a table and have the sign with our Encore logo. You may bring food to share, if you like and your own beverage. Also bring your own chair.

Enjoy the free concert with friends! No need to register, just come and enjoy!

Encore’s Friendly Summer Tennis

It’s time to get ready for another season of Encore’s Friendly Summer Tennis!

If you are interested in playing this summer, please email Carolyn Prazenka to be added to the weekly game scheduling list.

Encore’s Summer Tennis is for intermediate/advanced players interested in playing social tennis.

Games will be scheduled from 9:00–10:30 AM on Mondays through Thursdays at Mead Park, Har-Tru Tennis Courts (starting May).

Each week, you will receive an email inviting you to sign up for the days you'd like to play based on your schedule and availability.

Tennis Permits must be purchased through the New Canaan Recreation Department prior to play:

Resident Seniors (62+): $80
Resident Adults: $140
Non-Residents: $250

Or, you may pay a $15 guest fee each time you play—permits are encouraged.

This group was created for social bridge players of intermediate level to have fun practicing and improving their skills while enjoying the company of other ladies who are there to do the same thing. We are a fun-loving group and welcome players to be members of a set group or as substitutes. We play bridge on the second Wednesday of the month from September through May starting at 9:15 at the Lapham Community Center.

EATS (The Eating and Tasting Society) is a fun, diverse group of 36 ladies, divided into 3 groups. Each group gets together every three months, to plan and prepare a lunch for all the members. Luncheons are usually held at Lapham Community Center. Recipes are emailed to members and discussed at the luncheon.
